American Motors: AMC Eagles, circuit schematics, carburetion

Question
I just purchased an '83 SX-4 Eagle that has an ignition problem. The engine will start all right, but it will immediately start to sputter with wild swings in the Tachometer readings. The problem appears to be some sort of short in the Tach or coil circuit. Can you give me a suggestion, or better still a circuit schematics for the Eagles.

Answer
Try disconnecting the tach wire from the coil. If the condition still exsists, the tach is probably OK. If the condition goes away, check the wiring for shorts to ground or replace the tach. I do not have a wiring diagram for this car.
Inspect inside the distributor cap for cracks or carbon tracks. Does the engine run like this even after it warms up? Has this vehicle sat for a long period of time?
Could there be a problem in the carburetion?
