American Motors: batery goes dead how do you..., voltage spike, auto parts stores

Question
batery goes dead how do you check altinator

Answer
To properly test an alterator, you need a Voltmeter and an Ammeter. An alternator should put out at least 14.0 Volts. When the circuit is loaded by turning on electrical devices, the alternator should put out anywhere from 40 Amps or more, depending on the alternator. Many auto parts stores will test your alternator for free, if you bring it into them.Do NOT disconnect the battery with the engine running to test the alternator. The voltage spike can damage the alternator.
