Yes. They are the same position. In an effort to increase professionalism, many companies use the word "technician". With  today's advanced technologies in the automobile industry, a person needs to have more training than in the past. Auto Mechanics have often looked down upon as a lower class job, but it isn't. Today, the industry is in need of thousands of qualified technicians to keep cars & trucks going. A good Auto Technician can make excellent money, and can find positions all over the country.
