American Motors: brakes, american performance products, american station wagon

Question
I have a 1963 AMC Rambler American station wagon 220 that has brake drums all around. I am looking to see if their is any thing out there that I can use to convert my car into having front disc brakes? Of course i am asking because my brakes are dangerous and i am scared to have my wife and baby drive the car... please help, William May

Answer
William,
The problem with all AMC cars prior to 1970 is they do not have an upper ball joint. They have instead a trunnion style front  suspension. You can install disc brakes, if you use components from an AMC built 1969 or earlier. 1970 and later front disc brakes will not interchange with your American. Check out these AMC vendors, you should be able to find some used front disc brakes from them:
1)Collier AMC  919-242-4462
2)Eddie Stake's Planet Houston  713-785-1375 (11a.m.-1p.m. CST only)
3)American Performance Products; http://www.oldcarparts.com

Hope this helps.
