Audio Systems: 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 radio, ford lincoln mercury, mercury cd

Question
I have a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2. It has a factory radio/tape player in it with a 6-disk CD changer in the trunk. The CD changer stopped working. Please tell me how to fix this?

Answer
Wow, you are lucky it worked for so long!  They are very complex mechanisms and their reliability is not very good due to the difficult environment inside a car (Heat, vibration, etc.) Therefore, they are prone to failures of many kinds, both mechanical and electronic.

In order to know for sure it would require a technician to check it out and determine if the changer itself failed or some wiring or switching.  Assuming the changer - or the magazine - itself is the culprit you can probably find a replacement for less $$$ than repairing the old one.

The above is a good place to start. You can search through this site and find a replacement for your model.  Magazines run around $40 and cd changers are around $200.

But, here is an alternate solution. Especially, if you have and are using an iPod or MP3 portable player of one kind or another.

Many folks are going with the pocket adaptor because of the greater capacity for holding so many tunes and the fact you take the unit with you when leaving the car.

Hope this helps you decide what to do.
