Audio Systems: 2004 maxima preamp, 2004 nissan maxima, preamp outputs

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima. I suspect my preamp is blown again. I had the preamp replaced under warranty in 2009. Now the same symptoms have occured again. A loud pop from the speakers and no sound. Prior to the loud pop I did hear some static. The tape deck, CD palyer and radio all still work, but I get no sound. Please let me know where the preamp is located. I will change it again unless you have any other ideas I can try first.

Thanks in Advance.

ANSWER: The 2004 Maxima came with Bose, Infiniti or regular Nissan and they are all different.  I don't think any of them have a "preamp" in the sense of the usual definition. In the case of a Bose system the head unit is a kind of preamp because the power amps are mounted in the speaker baskets which makes it a very hard system to repair and troubleshoot.

So, without knowing which system you have in your Maxima it is difficult to say what the problem is.

In the Infinity system there should be a separate power amp fed from the preamp outputs of the head unit.

In the Bose case if all speakers went out then the trouble is most likely in the head unit mounted in the dash. If you have the Infinity system it could be the head unit or the power amplifiers.

Let me know which you have and we can do another take on it.

PS: If you go to crutchfield.com and work your way through the "what fits my car" it will help you determine by your answers which system you have and what works.  That will help you explain to me in your next question what is going on.

QUESTION: Sorry about the vague description. But my Maxima has the Bose system in it. The dealer replaced what they called the preamp while the car was still under warranty. The warranty has since expired and it happened again. The P/N is 280607Y300. Is this preamp or amp located in the dash or is it in the trunk by the speakers. Thanks for the quick response.

Answer
The part number you give, 280607Y300, is an amplifier that is plug compatible with the car wiring. It is not a preamp.  If you think that is the problem you can google that number and find a few online places that have it.  Cost is around $90 to $130 depending on who you buy it from.  A Nissan dealer may have it also but probably at a higher price.  Here is one spot I googled:

You can probably find it at a salvage yard, also, if they have the 04 Nissan with Bose system.  Also, I think the 05 - 08 take the same thing but I am not totally sure of that.

Hope this helps.

PS: The website given above shows a picture of the module and you should be able to find it from the looks.  From my memory it is mounted in the trunk under the rear deck.  You can look up there and if it is not there then it is probably under the radio in the dash.
