Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Model 311707 17hp Platinum OHV, engine crankcase, fuel nozzle

Question
After sitting, I get high compression when trying to start engine.  When it starts engine spits gas.  This last time would not start, took plug out and cranked it - lots of gas came out.  Oil was full of gas.  I took the bowl off the carb )it has a fuel solenoid - what is that?  The float looked okay.  I manually lifted the float and it would shut off gas.  Any thoughts on why I am getting gas in the cylinder and how I can fix?  Do I need a carb kit?  The mower is a 1998 Craftsman.

Thank you!

Answer
Your problem is almost always caused by a defective inlet needle and/or seat.  A new inlet needle tip is soft and flexible which seals off the gas.  Old needles sometimes leak causing gas to overflow allowing fuel to enter the engine crankcase thus contaminating the oil.

The shut-off solenoid is supposed stop fuel flow through the main fuel nozzle when you turn off the key preventing engine backfiring.

Send me the engine type and code number and I can look up you carb kit or inlet needle part number.
