Audio Systems: 1990 Ford Probe GL am/fm cassette deck, ford probe gl, clutch assemblies

Question
I recently purchased the above-mentioned automobile.  The cassette deck works; however, I am certain it would preform better if cleaned. I attempted to research online what type of cassette cleaner to use...but have not found an answer.  Can you advise?  Thanks!

Answer
You can purchase cleaning tape.  But, do not use anything liquid.  The only real way to clean a tape deck is to remove the unit from the car, take off the covers and get inside where the rollers, motors and clutch assemblies are locate and clean with q-tips.

That being said, it is doubtful if cleaning will improve it.  Usually the build up of oxide residue from cheap tapes clogs up the capstan and guides and causes the tape to skip or gurgle but sound quality remains ok.  Cleaning these conditions requires removal of the unit as above.
