Audio Systems: In-trunk 6 disc cd changer, ford cd changer, ford lincoln mercury

Question
I have a 2003 Ford Taurus.  The trunk mounted cd changer no longer works.  The dealer says it costs $450 for a new one.  Am I stuck having to buy a Ford cd changer, or can any cd changer work when connected to the factory radio? It looks like an off the shelf brand (such as Pioneer) can be purchased for under $200. I would like to keep the radio in the car the same, because when you put a new radio in the car, they just get stolen here in Houston.
Thanks,
Steve Jenkins
