Audio Systems: Does normal 5.1 channel speakers requires an amplifier to be connected?, samsung 26 inch lcd tv, inch lcd tv

Question
Hi,
I recently went to buy a 5.1 channel audio system for my Samsung 26 inch LCD Tv having a 5.1 output. The person at the showroom stopped me buying just an audio system for the TV on the pretext that they don't have amp in them and hence can damage the TV. He asked me to go for a home theater system along with the DVD player citing that the DVD player will have amplifier in it so will work great with my audio system. Got confused in this. Can you please clarify and suggest whats the correct deal?

Thanks

Answer
That is confusing. A DVD player on its own does not have an amp in it, but you will need a home theater system. The TV on it's own will not supply enough wattage to give you any headroom and give you the punch needed to drive 5 speakers. You can get a system without a DVD player with the receiver and speakers alone if you are on a budget, but I personally suggest a Blu-ray system. They will play standard DVDs and CDs as well and everything is going that direction.
