Audio Systems: pre-amp volume control, stereo potentiometer, 1v rms

Question
I am trying to run a car audio system straight from an iPhone. I have the component AV cables that power the phone and output the sound through RCA jacks, which will eventually run to an amp -> speakers. The problem is that the AV cables lock out the volume control of the iPhone and set it to max volume. This leaves the only gain control on the amp itself.

I could just use the headphone jack -> RCA -> amp -> speakers. Volume control on the ipod/iphone would work then. But it would make it a mess of cords in the console. And since it is my phone as well, I need to unplug/plug in every time I get in/out.

I read one of your answers about using a dual audo taper pot for volume from RCA->RCA, It sounded like it might do the trick if I put it between the phone and amp. How would I make this?

Answer
Yes, that is right; the audio line output is most often set for the fixed standard output level of 1v rms at 1khz into a 10k ohm load.

You must either add a volume control potentiometer of an audio control preamp.

Go to this google shopping page and find a few such devices:

These can often be mounted under the dash. They have rca inputs and outputs and can handle the iPhone and other inputs such as MP3 or cd players, etc.

If you just want to jerry rig a volume control that is easy, also.
They come in many sizes and shapes:

and can be mounted just about anywhere you would want.  They range in price from $2.00 to $20.  Coax cable should be used to solder to the pot.

Best wishes,

PS: I think Radio Shack would have one that would work just fine; you may have to devise your own mounting hardware for it.
