Audio Systems: receiver, klh r5000, volume circuit

Question
i have an old KLH r5000 receiver that i just found.  i hooked it up and start the dvd.  the sound only plays while turning the volume dial back and forth, and as soon as i stop the volume cuts out

Answer
Well, the first answer would be the volume control is defective, worn out or simply not functioning properly and should be replaced.

But, there is more to the story, as always.

IF: The control is mechanical it may just need cleaning.  Sometimes dirt or contamination can build up on the resistive element inside the rotary control.  There are cleaning agents that can be applied that will clean it up and get it working again.

IF: The control is electronic it may be the volume level IC controller is corrupted.  In this case an IC will need to be replaced.  And, it could be the logic signal coming from movement of the control is not getting addressed to the memory of the volume circuit.  This is more tricky but a good audio expert can quickly repair it for a fee.

I would estimate the repair will cost over $50 but less than $100.  You may be able to do the cleaning on your own; go to an electronic parts shop and acquire the cleaning fluid and see if that will work.

Hope this helps.
