Audio Systems: condenser mics, shure sm58, condenser mic

Question
Hello, I am a solo singer/guitarist. I was wondering can I sing thru my amp using a condenser mic at small clubs, ie;coffee house. thanks for your time.

Answer
Not recommended. Condenser mikes have higher sensitivity and are less forgiving when it comes to gain before feedback, especially if you use a foldback monitor. You will get far better results using a standard Shure SM58 or SM57 Beta series. Unfortunately there aren't any condenser microphone at that price point that will give you the performance needed for sound reinforcement. The reason you will see well known artists using condenser mics is that they have processing and professional engineers setting them up. You will still see lots of Shure mics used.
