Audio Systems: reel-to-reel tape player, ampex tape, sony tc

Question
I have an old Sony TC-755 reel-to-reel tape deck (early 70's) that I like a lot. I like the sound that this machine puts out and I would really like to keep it playing.

Recently, when I play a tape, after probably less then a minute the sound stops (no sound at speakers or headphones and the VU meters stop registering.

Any Ideas? Also, where could I get repair parts for this machine? I do have some experience in electronics repair and can solder.

Thanks for your time.

Answer
Unfortunately even the most expensive Studer, Scully and Ampex tape machines are considered relics. Nor do the manufacturers keep parts for obsolete technology 30 plus years ol. Divisions of those companies don't even exist anymore. Since Sony was only in the pro tape business for about 5 years their machines were not analog. I have an associate who paid $150,000 15 years ago for a Sony multi-itrack digital tape machine. He can't even give it away.

Having said that, you would need to find an old timer technician who likes to tinker and may be able to help you out if parts aren't needed or he can substitute any non working electronics.

My recommendation is not to waste your time. Cost wise, I would say that depending on what you are recording you might be better off looking on Ebay for an old Revox reel to reel
