Audio Systems: Toshiba TN50x81 no picture & popping sound, toshiba tn50x81, equivalent substitutes

Question
I read one of your previous responses regarding a similar issue. Today our TV picture went blank and when I went to turn the TV back on it made a consistent popping sound that eventually was magnified by the speakers and the picture did not come on. No smell of anything burning and there was no loud noise when the picture went dead. Any ideas? Is it worth repairing and could I do the repair myself?

Answer
Well, the set is over 10 years old.  Good for another few years, perhaps, but the repair will cost around $400. It is probably a better investment to apply the money towards a new set.

The problem is in the power supply and the main rectifiers need replaced and a couple of regulators, too. You could repair this by yourself if you have the technical skill set.  You will need a good VOM to check the voltage outputs of all the dc lines (including the regulated outputs and high voltage) to the video, audio and deflection boards.  A good technician would take 30 minutes or so just to do the diagnostics on it.  An amateur may take a couple of hours.  Repairs would involve digging out the bad diodes and electrolytics and soldering in the new ones.  Probably, the original parts are no longer available so appropriate equivalent substitutes would need to be sourced.
