Audio Systems: 5 to 7 channel amp vs 2 channel amp, vynal records, channel amp

Question
QUESTION: Can I get the same quality from a 5 channel amp using only two of the 5 channels as from a conventional 2 channel Stereo amplifier assuming both amps have equal quality components inside.  I only want stereo from my TV because there isn't enough room for all the speakers for surround sound. Or is the output from the surround sound split up by filters etc. before reaching the amplifiers speaker terminals making it necessary to connect speakers to all outputs in order to get full range of sound.

ANSWER: As long as the surround amplifier was made within the last few years the front and rear channels should have the same power ratings and not use any encoding in a stereo mode. Most amplifiers are configurable with their menu (usually the mode control) to operate as stereo from all channels as well as matrix to various surround sound modes. In the auto mode it will sense the type of signal and route the signal through the appropriate speakers.

QUESTION: To simplify the question; will my vynal records sound as good using the front two speakers of a 5 channel amp as they would with a similar two channel stereo amp?

I do appreciate your time

Answer
I may not be the right expert for you since my experience puts me on the cutting edge of mastering and performance audio.

I would not be truthful if I simply said yes or no. The answer to your  question relies on several factors. One is what cartridge and what transcription turntable are you using? What is the condition and type of vinyl that you are listening to?

The answer might be a bit simpler if you are reproducing CD's or other digital sources because the variables do not change as drastically.

As far as the differences between listening to stereo or simulated quad, the considerations to take into account are the following; the size, dimensions and accoutrement of the room where your sound system is located; the position and type of speakers that you are listening to; the sweet spot (if your speakers are not forgiving).

If it were me I would not be using a surround sound amplifier. I would use a pre amp and 2 channel amplifier combination. Hybrid tubes with ribbon drivers. But then again I am more of a purest. My clients ordinarily tell me how much they want to spend and I work backwards into their budget. Give me an open checkbook and I can spent several hundred thousand on a simple stereo performance system.
