Audio Systems: dvd stereo no sound + blue screen, amp output, wiring harnesses

Question
I tried to install by myself a Jensen DVD stereo to my o3 Impala... how come i don't get any sound and when I put in a DVD I only got a blue screen

Answer
Oh, there are so many possibilities.  You probably need to start over and make sure you have the right wiring harnesses and double check all the connections. This is not an easy installation and unless you are an experienced installer you should probably get a professional to help with the job.

Since you did not give me the model number of the Jensen unit nor the particulars of the 03 Impala (there are great differences between models and original factory equipments) I can only give you some generic ideas.

First, check the 12v wiring. There should be two 12v lines; one is direct from the battery (through a fuse, somewhere). The other is a 12v line coming from ignition that is the remote turn on.  If there is an external audio power amp in the system you must also check the power wiring to it AND the audio outputs from the deck to the inputs of the amp.

Second, check the wiring or wiring harness from amp output to the speakers. The wiring must match.  The individual audio amp output wiring must be properly connected to each speaker in the car; left front amp output must be connected directly to the left front speaker.  It can be checked with a VOM - if you have one and know how to use it.

Thirdly, for the video, make sure you have an input; if the Jensen has a video input from the dvd player it must be connected properly; it if is internal then you must make sure the player has the full power to it.  If still no video you might have to pull the entire unit out and "bench test" it outside the car to make sure it is not defective.

Fourth, to check if you have the right wiring harness for your car I suggest you go to either WWW.installer.com or www.cruthfield.com and look it up; order one if you need to do so.  At crutchfield.com you will find a "outfit my car" procedure that will lead you to the right optional equipment including the wiring harness.  It is an easy check.

The above is where it starts.

Good Luck, I hope this gets you started on the solutions you need.
