Audio Systems: shelf stereo, bench fee, stereo systems

emerson stereo (ms9920tt) nothing but static and hum on all am and fm stations. speakers work fine for turntable cd and tapes.

As an expert for professional, not consumer equipment I can only make some suggestions. It sounds like an internal problem since there is not much you can do to change the internal workings of the AM/FM stages especially if the turntable and CD are working.

If the unit is older than 90 days then it is out of warrantee so it means that that you will have to pay a minimum bench fee if you take it to an authorized service station. Emerson does not make expensive stereo systems so it may be a good idea to surf the web for the price of new equivalent systems. Then use that information to decide whether you want to service it or not. If it's old you may want to consider that having it repaired will not guarantee that it will be without problems in the near future and you will have no recourse.
