Audio Systems: surround, digital audio connections, hook ups

Question
QUESTION: I have a Kenwood audio-video surround receiver VR-407, that doesn't work quite
right. The problem is the center channel and surround speakers don't seem to
work, the side speakers and the sub work good, as far as I can tell. On the
front of the receiver it shows a little display of the speakers, and the side
speakers both have a little box around them. The receiver also will not
recognize any signal from the cable box either, I've tried several different
combinations in attempts to plug it in.  Can anything be done to fix this?
Thanks for any response.

ANSWER: Some questions...

How do you have your components(cable box, dvd player, cd, etc) connected to the receiver? Are you using digital inputs or analog stereo inputs (red and white)?

Some receivers have input settings to automatically decode surround channels (pro logic) from the stereo inputs. Have you checked this?

Is there any kind of menu for the cable box to adjust output settings?

QUESTION: They are all analog hook ups. I don't know if there is a menu for output on the cable box, I'll check. Even with the dvd player sometimes if there is some silence in the movie the sound will go off, and if I hit the listen mode button, it comes back on. Thanks.

Answer
The only thing with the cable box that I can think of is that if you are going with a standard stereo outut to the Kenwood, you won't get anything from the center and surrounds UNLESS you are in Pro Logic mode. To take advantage of the truee surround, use the digital audio connections. Any RCA cable will do (if it's optical - shop for price as a more expensive cable won't make digital audio sound any better).
