Audio Systems: hooking a system up to a factory cd player, mtx subs, mtx speakers

Question
QUESTION: I am trying to hook a system up using the factory cd player in a 2002 xterra. Is that possible? If so how?

ANSWER: Yes, it is possible but the real question is: "Is it practical"?

As a general rule it is not very practical.  Why? Because you must have a 12v supply to power the cd player; the cost of a supply big enough to power the player are usually around $80 to $100.  The price of a cd player now days is $30 and up.

If you could tell me the make and model of the system you want to play the xterra cd player through I can give you some more specific advice on how to do it.

QUESTION: The subwoofers are 2mtx thunder 8000. The amp is a 300 watt mtx. Also when you turn it up loud the subwoofer has like a popping said. i know that usually means they are busted but could it be them no getting enough power to them? i have never heard one do it just when very low bass. With high pinched bass sounds fine i don't understand???????????

Answer
IF: The speaker and amplifiers are working properly and there are no defects in them the popping sound can be from either over driving the speakers (the popping comes from the speakers mechanically bottoming out) or from the amplifier being overdriven and going in to clipping (which causes the popping sound after the square flat top of the clipped wave hits the woofer).

IF: A sub woofer inside the box is defective in some way - such as the surrounds coming loose or ripped or the dust cap loose - the popping sound can be generated with high power input.

IF: The amplifier is under rated for the speaker power ratings and is drive into clipping that can result in popping or blooping sounds, as above.

Hope this helps.

PS: The MTX speakers are relatively low efficiency or sensitivity, mostly around 88 to 89db which takes about twice the power as a more typical subwoofer which are around 91 to 93db thus your MTX subs would be better sounding with a bigger amp - all things being equal.
