Audio Systems: hard drive dvd players, sony web site, high definition dvd players

Question
QUESTION: I'm looking at buying a Sony dvd hard drive player, but ONLY to use the hard drive for music only, that is, load it with songs from my personal cd collection and play it back through my home stereo. #1: Will this work, and #2: Do I have to hook up the dvd player to a tv set or screen to access the songs stored on the hard drive. The particular player I'm looking at says it has a "digital jukebox" in it, so I'm assuming it will work. What do you think? Thanks.

ANSWER: If you are just transferring cd audio to hd, why not just use you media player and rip them to your hard disk for playback.

If you are thinking of the Sony HD players, they are High Definition dvd players and recorders and are not intended for audio only, but I suppose you could use them thusly.   Download the owners manual from the Sony web site and study it for the recording features, etc.

If you can give me a model number I can be more specific about its capability; just let me know.

BUT: A dvd player typically has analog audio outputs that can connect directly to any audio amplification system.  Audio and video connections are independent of each other (in composite mode).

AND:  Digital Jukebox products - which can record - that I am aware of require connection to a PC for the cataloging and title library functions.

Hope this helps;  I know it does not answer your question completely, but let me know more about what you are wanting to do and the model number of the Sony unit and I can elaborate further.

QUESTION: It's the RHDHX750 model...299.00 at my local Futureshop. I'm trying to avoid my computer for my stereo ( different rooms, length problems, etc. ). I'd like to put all my favourite tunes into this slim dvd player, and play it through my Harmon Kardon amplifier, but I'm afraid that I will need a tv to access the songs, unless I make a list on paper of the tracks, for example, track 67 is Stairway to Heaven, 247 is Jump, etc., and refer to my paper list. Please let me know if this is possible, and what your opinion is after investigating the model. Thanks again.

Answer
Are you sure you don't mean the RDRHX750 by Sony?

This model is intended for dvd type usage with tv monitor in mind. It will play and record cd-da and cd-r but if you want to see the screens you must have it connected to a monitor/display.

You may be able to operate it with the remote control only, but as you conjectured, you must know what number you are searching for.  Also, I donot know the upper limit on the number of items it will catalog. Since it is intended for video program recordings which take enormous amounts of storage there may be a limited number of tunes it will hold in its library.

I would spend some time at FutureShop checking it out.  Sony does not have the owners manual posted on its download site so I could not get its technical specifications for you.

Assuming it is configured as most other HD recorders it will require a display/monitor to get full usage of its features.  You could use a small LCD monitor so long as it has the component video inputs for this function.

Good Luck,
C

PS:  Often, if you ask the sales clerk at the store, you can get the manual out of the box and study its recording and playback features for your more detailed understanding.  I suggest you do that before making the purchase.
