Audio Systems: Panasonic PlasmaTH-50PX60U, panasonic plasma tv, ribbon connector

Question
This morning we turned on our tv and noticed a thin, stationary, black horizontal line across the screen. It is on every channel and when we play dvd's.  Watched a movie the night before and it was not there.  Warranty expired January 31, 2008 (of course). It is only one year old. Do you have any ideas what this is or if it could be fixed without calling out a Panasonic home tech?

Answer
Seems to be a common problem with this model.  See:

http://www.fixya.com/support/t215906-thin_black_line_in_panasonic_plasma

and other such chatter.

This model could have a service bulletin out even though I could not find one on line.  I suggest you call an authorized P warranty dealer and ask if they have service bulletin on it and/or has Panasonic extended the warranty.   Panasonic has made great effort in the past to promote their plasma sets and they should stand behind a problem that is known to be giving significant troubles to its customers.  If you don't get satisfaction, keep pushing up the ladder to higher authority until they listen to you.  You owners manual will have an 800 service number to call or you can get it from the manual.

The problem could be serious.  If the display and/or drivers need to be replaced it could cost more than the set cost when new.  If it is the ribbon connector and cable it would not be so much.  And,of course, there are other possible defects that could be the kulprit.

Hope this will help you,
C
