Steering Column Repair: ignition locks repair, chevrolet truck, lock cylinder

Question
I have a 99 cadi deville, and I want to know about repairing my Ignition. I have the computer chip in the key. I turned the switch to start and it went all the way around, now I can't get the key out, because the switch won't go back to the lock position. what is the cost for this If you know.

Answer
Hi Kenneth:

It sounds like the lock cylinder has failed.  You will need to replace the lock cylinder and recreate new keys with the existing chip value.
Here's what needs to happen.  To replace the lock cylinder, you will need to dis-asemble the column down to that point.  We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the loose tilt column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.

Next, you will need to take the old key with the new key blank from the new cylinder and go to either a dealer or a locksmith and have them cut you a new key matching the key cuts from the new key and chip from the old key.
The whole process cost wise is about $90 in parts and key. If you have a shop do it all it can run as high as $400.  If you decide to attempt to replace the entire column, you will still need to recreate the key and now run the risk of affecting the airbag system and creating a new problem.

I hope all this helps you.
Good luck
Doug
