Audio Systems: Keep the BOSE or go after market?, bose systems, acura rl

Question
I have just purchased a 99' Acura RL. (in Nice Condition!) The dilemma is do I want to keep the factory BOSE system or go after market? I know that Bose is top shelf audio, but if I want to install Subs in the trunk (I'm thinking 12" dual's in  a Banpass box) I will have to replace the head unit.  What part of the system is BOSE?  Is it the head unit only, or speakers too?  I know they position the door speakers   w/ att. to sound flow and all that, but would it work with aftermarket door speakers just the same?  Also I have done research and there might be more than just the visable 4  speakers w/ system.  If i replace the head unit will this elimanate the steering wheel sterio controls to?  I am willing to throw down ($) for all the replacement set up & i know what to look for performance wise but i don't know about the BOSE factory settings and compatibility.  Thanks!

Answer
Bose is a non-standard manufacturer.  Generally, it is recommended that if you want to upgrade you should gut out the entire system and replace the entire system, head unit, amplifiers, speakers and all.

If you have technical skills and know what you are  doing you can add subwoofers to the system but it requires a modified interface because the line audio voltage levels Bose uses are different than every one else.

See this discussion:

Also, see;

http://www.installer.com/hilo/

for various adapters for hi-lo interface with Bose systems.  Honda related are down on the page if you search for them.

I caution you to add/alter the Bose system; only  a few have done it successfully and after much aggravation and adjustments.

Best wishes,
