Audio Systems: Sound for Small to Medium Venues, microphone cables, powered mixer

Question
We in the process of purchasing a sound system for a new artist and want to purchase a system that will eventually accommodate up to 7 musicians, including vocalist.

If you have a better recommendations we would like to know that as well.

Answer
Hi Lee-

Most mixers and sound systems are designed for multiples of 2, but a few fill in those gaps. For example, you can get a mixer with 8, 12, 16, 24, etc channels. Each channel is one input to the system.  Since you will probably be running microphones, make sure the mixer provides Phantom Power (most do.)

I would recommend getting separate, dedicated equipment for each function. That is, get a mixer, an amplifier, some speakers. Don't get an amplifier with a mixer built in (called a powered mixer). Don't get speakers with an amplifier built in (called powered speakers.)  If each piece of equipment does one thing and only one thing, it will be easier to troubleshoot, upgrade, and fix.

Depending on the size of the venue, you may want to purchase a snake. A snake is a long cord with a box on the end. The box has several inputs and outputs on it, and the other end of the cord (the one without the box) plugs into your mixer. The main advantage of this system is that you only have one cable running from the stage to the back of the house, and all of the microphone cables and so forth can be shorter, since they only have to go from the source to the snake's box.

Finally, I would discourage purchasing equipment online, unless you absolutely need to.  In my experience, you will always get better service from your local businesses. Plus, if something breaks, it is much easier to return and get a replacement.

Hope this helps!
