Audio Systems: car stereo, rca cables, star washers

Question
Hi Scott, I'm confused on how the wiring on my noise filter works w/ the capacitor, mainly the ground wires. Should I hook them all together (amp, cap & filter)? I'm still getting alt whine. Thx Shane

Answer
A noise filter is a band-aid for the real problem, a ground-loop.

A ground-loop is when there is a difference in ground potential between two or more pieces of equipment.

Check all grounds for a clean (paint free), secure connection. I would recommend star washers with lock nuts if at all possible.

You can also either twist the RCA cables or buy shielded RCA cables. The best RCA cables are made from RG6 CATV cable and can be made or purchased relatively cheaply.
