Audio Systems: Stereo Equipment cleaning, sansui, stereo equipment

Question
Hi, I have an older Sansui stereo system: Amp. Tuner, 5 CD Changer and an
Equalizer.
Lately I have had to jiggle, re-throw or repress switches or buttons on each
componont to get sound from one or both speakers. One individual told me I
needed to replace the switches/buttons etc. while another person told me a
good cleaning is the culprit. What in your opinion is the trouble?
If the system just needs a good cleaning how would you recommend doing it
and what would you use to clean? Thank for your time!
I leave in AZ. so there isn't any moisture to speak of.

Answer
With time, all switches and controls get "dirty" and accumulate dust.  These need to be cleaned with a switch cleaner.  There are a number of brands of these cleaners around.  All I would suggest is that you use one that contains a lubricant as well.  Flush out all of the switches and controls.  Realize that this must be done a number of times over a period of weeks to allow the accumulated crap to loosen up and be flushed out.
