Audio Systems: Workout room, flat screen tv, composite video output

I'm going to build a work out room in my basement.
I want some type of flat screen TV 20-30", the ability to play the TV and Work Out DVD's/VHS tapes and have sound ALWAYS come out through speakers not TV. I guess I would put maybe four speakers spread evenly into the ceiling. Room is about 13' x 15'. That said, would I want to look for a DVD/VHS player to drive the speakers directly? Radio might be nice too. Can you recommend some fairly cost effective equipement that work toegther to get the job done and sound pretty good?

I am not in a position to recommend manufacturers for installations.  you need to shop around for what makes sense for you.  As far as the audio only going to a stereo, connection a DVD player to a TV using only the video output while sending the audio out to a stereo is simply a connection issue.  Connect them as follows:

Yellow composite video output from DVD -> AV input on TV (Yellow)
Red/White Audio outputs ->  Aux/DVD input on stereo.
