Audio Systems: Amplifier Problems, output transistors, speaker wires

Question
Hi Dan,
I ran into a problem a couple days ago.  I run a JL 500/1 amplifier hooked
up to 2 Infinite 10" subs (as for specifics on the subs, I can get those later if
you wish).  I was driving and listening to music when all of a sudden my
subwoofers shut off and never came back on.  I pulled over and the amp
wasn't hot because I'd just started driving, and there was no awkward smell
possibly showing some type of burn.  Now the amp will turn on, only the
green signal is lit, but there's no output signal.  I've unhooked the amp from
the power source to reset but no luck.  Any advice?  Thanks.

Answer
If the wiring looks good, then either the speakers are bad or the amp is not turning on completely.  Disconnect the speaker wires and touch them across a 9V battery quickly.  You should hear a pop.  Don't leave the battery connected, only make a momentary connection to hear the pop.  If you hear the pop, the speakers are ok and the amp is likely to be in protect mode.  The output transistors or packs are shorted.  This will nned a service tech to fix.
