Audio Systems: turntable hookup, phono preamp, harmon kardon

Question
I have hooked up a JVC turntable to a Harmon Kardon integrated amp(PM655VX1),my problem is that I get no sound response through the speakers when I activate the turn- table . This turntable has a MM cartridge and the amp has switch to chose between a MM or MC cartridge, set on MM. It also was 2 phone jack plugs in back for either style cartridge .If I hook it up to another older amp that has only one phone jack connection point it play's fine . Any ideas what could be wrong with this amp or turntable ? Also turntable has new needle

Answer
Have you tried both inputs on the HD amp?  Even tho you are using the MM setting, I suspect the same preamp input is to be used. The only difference between a MM and MC input is voltage gain and input impedance.

Probably, the phono preamp is defective in the HK rcvr.  If the JVC is working fine in another amp it must be concluded the rcvr unit is the problem.

You can test the preamp inputs this way:  Be sure the amp is on and the volume set to a very low level. Switch to the MM input and take a very short section of wire  (you can straighten out a paper clip) and insert it into the center hole so as to touch the "hot" connection. You should hear  loud hum from the speakers (induced from your body).  If no hum or very low hum you either don't have the right connection set or the preamp is defective.

Hope this helps.
