Audio Systems: subwoofer hookup, rca cable, rca jacks

Question
QUESTION: hello Dan, I have a sony sa-w3000 subwoofer and trying to connect it with a sony dg910 reciever. I have the subwoofer cable that I bought also. I have it pluged into the speaker in outlit and then going into the subwoofer outlit on the back of the reciever( there are 4 outlits, none of them named, just located in the subwoofer setting. I have power on the subwoofer I can see by the power on light, but no sound coming from the subwoofer... can you help me ?  thanks Dan

ANSWER: This unit has 2 options for inputs, line level and speaker level.  Since your receiver has the line level output, that is the preferred method.  Looking at the back of hte receiver, there are a group of 4 RCA jacks labeled Sub-woofer.  Connect a cable from the lower right jack to the input jack on the sub-woofer.  That is the correct connection for your pieces.
Update this with your results.

QUESTION: ok, I have done that as you said, still no sound. this is the 2nd subwoofer, so Im sure its not a problem. Im just guessing that I should do something on the sonydg910 reciever?

Answer
OK.  We have eliminated the sub as the problem.  One more test to be sure though.  Disconnect the RCA cable from the receiver and with the power on at the sub,  Touch the post of the RCA cable with your finger, you should hear a hum coming from the sub.  If so, the sub is working.

Make sure that the surround is turned on at the receiver.  If there is a simulated surround mode, turn that on to insure that the receiver is sending a signal even if the source wouldn't necessarily have one.  Reconnect the RCAs and try again.  If no output, the receiver needs to be examined by a service tech as the surround processor is most likely faulty.
