Audio Systems: Home Audio, bells whistles, floor speakers

Question
Robert, The last stereo system I purchased for my home was about 15 yrs ago. It was a component system with a tuner, cd player, and a couple good floor speakers. I added a turntable. I believe I paid approx $800. It's ready for the graveyard. I need to replace it, but things have changed so much, I don't know what to look for. I've seen stuff that looks so-so for $300-400. I don't want to spend much and I don't need a lot of bells & whistles. I'd like a tuner, equalizer, cd player and 2-4 speakers (maybe wall mountable). Where and what should I look for to get decent quality sound? I'm not sure I can afford Bose, but I here it's about the best.  If I can get decent sound for $400-500, I'll be happy. Can you help me out? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Pro audio is really my expertise. Whenever I hear someone looking for a deal on stereo's I think of only one thing. Go to your nearest Best Buy, PC Richards, Target or major department store. You want to buy something that you can return if you don't like it and you want to by from people who are not going to try and sell you what you don't want. I am a pro Bose dealer and can tell you that it's no better than any of the other major brands. The best is far beyond what your looking for. Only look for the features that appeal to you. Power is meaningless at that price so listen for sound from the speakers that seems most natural. Hope that helps.
