Audio Systems: speaker connectors, electronic crossovers, crossover networks

Question
Hi, I purchased a set of Klipsch floor standing speakers and they have four wire connectors on the back instead of just two.  The owners manual was not helpful on what the extra two connectors are for or how they can be used.

Answer
Depends on the model.

However, most of the Klipsch speakers are set for bi-amp application.  Under this arrangement the two sets of connections are jumpered together and the speaker is connected to either pair - since they are jumpered together.

For bi-amping the jumpers are removed and the upper pair is used for the high frequency amp and the lower pair are connected to the low frequency amp.

Bi-amp operation requires two amps per speaker and an electronic crossover ahead of the amplifiers.  There are those who claim electronic crossovers are better sounding than passive crossover networks.

Hope this answers your question.
