Audio Systems: 2001 Nissan Altima CD changer, nissan altima, nissan maxima

Question
My wife has a 2001 Altima with a 5 disc CD changer. She can not eject the CDs; an ERR2 (error code) appears; there is no reference to error codes in the owners manual. Can you advise me how to address this concern?

Thanks

Answer
The err2 merely means the changer is malfunctioning.
It is most likely either jammed or the electronic servo system has failed and the command structure for operating the drive mechanism is out of whack.

Unfortunately, the cost of repair may be hefty due to the necessity of pulling it out, taking it a part and trying to find out which parts failed.

Sometimes the digital command codes get corrupted and a hard reset will bring it back to life. To do that you must completely remove power from the changer and head unit for at least 20 minutes.  Easiest way to do this is to pull the power for the whole car by removing one of the battery cables from the battery terminals. (But, if this set is anti-theft coded make sure you have the code so you can get it to come back on again).

Also, a foreign object stuck inside the mechanism will cause a jam-up.  If you can see down inside look for a coin, dirt, cinder or anything that might have become lodged in the works.

The people above have your unit on sale for $240 - which may be an alternate to getting it fixed by a tech.

Also, many are just replacing the cd players with an iPOD or mp3 player; it will hold many times more tunes than the changer and is easily removed when you leave the car.
