Audio Systems: Philips LCD, direct tv satellite, video vga

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I am in WA. I bought and sent a Philips LCD to my parents in Nigeria. For some reason there is sound but no picture. Could you please advise on what to do

ANSWER: I would love to help you but there are a long list of possibilities. Too long for me to mention. You need to have them do some basic troubleshooting like try an old TV in place to see if it gets a picture. If you give me a list of what they've done so far including every piece of cable and equipment in the signal chain maybe I can offer some suggestions. What is their signal source. If you didn't ship it the way Phillips originally shipped it to you, it could have been damaged in shipping. There are not many companies that waranttee their products if they've been shipped out of a country and that includes those companies that do business Internationally. It violates certain trade agreements with the distributors.

QUESTION: Hello Robert-
Thanks for the response. Basically the TV works with a dvd player attached to it. Ie it shows both picture and the sound is great. the problem is when the direct TV satellite is connected to it, it only comes up with sound no picture. An old tv works with the dish connected to it. The LCD is a 32" Philips

Answer
That's some good information. Ok...we know that the TV gets picture and sound so it workks. If it works with the DVD connected they can substitute the output of the dish box temporarily to the DVD inputs. LCD's are not really TV's in the sense that they don't have simple inputs, outputs & switching. They are designed to work with a myriad of video variations. As well there are several input sources with internal processing to scale the picture to fit the screen. What inputs are they using (ie: composite, component, RF, S video, VGA?). They must use the menu of the TV and select the input to match what is plugged into it as well as what input it's plugged into. It should be a methodical process and they will eventually get it to work.
