Audio Systems: radio, bose system, typical configuration

Question
I have a 2001 silverado with the bose system in it. there is little sound coming from the speakers and there is no bass. what could be the problem? I think that one of the speakers are blown could this cause a problem with the whole system?

Answer
Probably the amplifier(s) are out.
And, yes it could be a subwoofer that produces bass is out; either the voice coil, the wiring or the amplifier could be defective.

The Bose system employs amplifiers right at the speaker in some models. A typical configuration for your Silverado (but there were several different systems for that year) would be small amps right at the speakers that are mounted in the door and back seats; separate amp and subwoofer.  If you are not getting much sound, go around one by one and listen to each speaker; you may find some have sound and some have none.

Then let me know what you find out; then we can go to the next step. (cleggsan @ ieee.org)
