Audio Systems: 94 Infiniti Factory Bose Dead, bose systems, bose system

Question
Hi, my head unit on my 1994 Infiniti does not power on. Apparently it's a
common failure because the new units are $1,600 and the used ones are highly
sought after on eBay. I've tried a place in Texas to repair this unit without
success. The repair shop in Florida won't even work on it. Can you recommend a
place that can repair my unit?

Answer
This old does not make it a very good investment choice for repair. The set is old enough that even if you did find a good repair shop it is statistically very likely another failure would be just around the corner.

Quite frankly, in my personal opinion, I would not repair or replace it with a Bose system.  There are, in the intervening years, many aftermarket choices that will bring you superior performance and technology at a lower price - even if you have to pay a large installation fee.

You should think about gutting out the bose system all together and getting a good install shop to put in a new super system. You can do very good for half the price of a bose replacement set.

Go to www.crutchfield.com and go through the options for your car (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3fLXgey6EaG/cgi-bin/autoinfo/autoinfo.asp?) and study some of the available offerings.  You don't have to purchase from them, but if you do they will send out the necessary wiring harness and installation instructions that will be useful for you or for your installer.

Hope this helps.

PS: The reason the shops don't want to work on your bose is because of its age and because bose systems are non-standard and they are difficult to make repairs on.
