Audio Systems: Amplifier clipping, sony minidisc, true rms

Question
Hi Cleggsan
I have an akai stereo integrated amplifier (am-uo2) with a rating of 45 true rms watts per ch  . Now the other day the volume was pretty high without any clipping or distortion. I did something stupid experimentally, i cranked up the bass control to +10db just to "feel" the exaggerated bass , immediately a distortion sounded, the clipping meter lit up and has ever since remained lit. So now whenever i even turn on the amp main power switch, the clipping meter just lights up immediately even without playing anything. PLs help me as to what could have gone drastically wrong, and if the amp can be serviced /repaired now? I hope its not something very serious even though i get the feeling ive toasted the amp!! There was neither any burning smell nor indication whatsoever!
PLs help me with your wealth of expertise and experience as you have in the past . ( sony minidisc, grx8, rms ratings, mix and match etc).
Thanking you in anticipation.

Answer
Try a reset. Unplug the power cord of the amplifier for at least 30 minutes. Then power it up again and see if does not reset.

At the same time check the wiring to make sure you have not shorted connections or wires touching each other at the terminals on the back of the amp and speakers.

If it repeats, reset it again, but disconnect the speaker wires at the back of the amp.  Then connect them one at at time as it is possible a short inside one of the speakers is causing it.

Let me know.
