Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a car that was a rental, new car dealerships, mileage vehicle

Question
I am going to be buying a used Toyota Highlander for my 19 year old daughter to take up to college. I am considering 2-3 year old cars, most seem to be coming off lease. However, I have also seen some 2007 models with low milege (under 15000 miles) that were formerly rental vehicles. What is your opinion of buying a rental car?

Answer
I know some people think a rental car is the last thing you should purchase, but I think they're a good buy if they're a program vehicle.  Program cars are ordered and equipped a certain way (most popular colors and options), are maintained on schedule and have not been in a major accident.  These vehicles are only found at new-car dealerships; rental cars sold through the rental company's own lots (Enterprise and Hertz, for example) are often vehicles that don't meet these standards, so proceed with caution if looking at one of those (pay particular attention to signs of body repair, as this is where the wrecked cars often turn up).

I've always maintained that the most important consideration when buying a used car is condition- I'd much rather buy a higher-mileage vehicle in excellent shape than a low-mileage car that's been abused. You'll pay less upfront and spend less in repairs, all other things considered.
