Audio Systems: RCA CD Player Drawer Wont Open, rca cd, rca stereo

Question
I have an RCA (Thomson) Rack System (Model #RS2505Sl) that I purchased in 2001. Shortly after I got it home the drawer to the Five-Disc Changer would not open. I took to an RCA Authorized Repair Shop here in Cleveland, Ohio.  The Repairer found nothing wrong with the thing, and after I broght it back home, it worked fine.   A few months later the same thing happened, where I, again, took it to same repair shop--where nothing was found to be wrong. It worked fine for a few more months.  But that same problem has come back again-the drawer won't open.   All other Functions (Tape, Auxilary, Tuner) work just fine.   I would like to listen to my CD Collection in the apartment with real stereo sound as opposed to just being able to listen to them in my car and on my computer (or the television, since I have a DVD player that plays CDs as well, but it is not hooked up to the Stereo System.  Can you help me out, please?

Thank you.

Answer
Nowadays 6 years if a very long time for the likes of components such as that RCA rack system. That actually goes for many manufacturers who make audio components these days. Many of the moving mechanical parts are made of plastic and are affected by temperature and/or continuous use. I certainly don't recommed taking it anywhere for repair. What probably is happening is when you transport the player the separation between the plastic drawer and it's housing probably changes by a millimeter or so which is enough to get it opening again. I am not a fan of CD changers even though I know that most of the changers made now have corrected that problem. If your DVD player is located fairly close to your stereo components, simply use it as an external source and plug an RCA stereo male to male cable into the left and right audio output of the DVD player and the other ends into the Auxiliary input of the receiver or amplifier of the Thompson Rack system. I'm sure it will sound as good if not better than the 5 CD changer.
