Audio Systems: cds stuck in 6 changer cd player, ford explorer xlt, 2002 ford explorer xlt

Question
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer, xlt.  Factory installed 6 changer cd player.  Store bought cd's seem to work fine.  My daughter put a cd she burned into the player while 3 other cd's where in there.  all are now stuck.  I get a error message when I hit eject.  I tried unhooking a battery terminal so it might reset.  No go.  any suggestions other than having a expert dismantle and re-assemble?

Answer
Check the manual on the unit.  It may instruct not to use cdr and ripped cds.  Some of the home recorded cds are slightly different in thickness (and other specs) and will not play compatibly in older models.  All the new cars have newer play mechanisms that have been made cdr proof.

There may be a mechanical reset on this model. Look around the front panel where the changer mechanism is and see if you see a small hole; if so, use a paper clip straightened out and push it in the hole for a reset.  You might get lucky.

If not, you will need an expert to open it up. It is not that hard, but it takes a special tool to get the unit out and on the bench.

At the site above you may be able to find an adapter that would allow you to add an external changer and just forget about the defective one; downside is finding a place to mount it and getting it properly wired in.  Just an idea.
