Audio Systems: Boat CD Player, car cd player, gauge number

Question
I recently bought a cheap cd player for my boat I hooked it up and everything seemed to work fine but when I turn it up loud or turn on bass boost the sound cuts in and out until I turn it down. The CD player is a Durabrand 60 Watt AM/FM Car CD Player. Thank You in advance

Answer
Durabrand is from Walmart.  Actually, they aren't bad stuff as a rule.

Of course, the new unit you just purchased could be defective, but I am going to rule that out and assume the problem you are facing is an installation matter.

If the voltage drops too low the unit will drop or fade out.  If the wires you run to connect the player are long and small there could be a large voltage drop when you turn up the bass (which draws maximum current).

Therefore, I suspect the wiring is too small and you should run another wire in parallel or replace the current wires with much larger size (smaller gauge number).  I you notice the wires coming off the battery they are super large cables. Your cd player doesn't need anything that large, but maybe 8 gauge or 6 gauge wire will do the job.  The wire coming from the battery to the unit and the ground wire must be large.  And, the ground line must have a good connection to metal; but if the boat does not have a good metal ground back to the battery, then run a ground wire back to the negative terminal of the battery.

Let me know if I have confused you in any degree.
