Audio Systems: Car stereos powers up, no sound., stock speakers, car stereos

Question
QUESTION: One day the OEM car stereo in my 1999 Monte Carlo just had no sound.  There was a little static/popping sound a few times and that was it.  Well I switched out the stereo with an after market stereo and still the same thing.  I hooked up an external speaker to test it, and still no luck.  I did check for all the fuses and relays, they are all fine.  I have hooked up several car stereos in my time so I know everything is good in that respect.  Any ideas?

ANSWER: If any speaker wires get shorted together or to ground the internal amp will have no output to protect itself from damage. Look for a loose or shorted speaker first.

QUESTION: Figuring that the stock speakers may have something to do with the stereo not working I did hook up an external speaker and still no sound.

Answer
Not the speakers as much as the wiring may have been shorted together, even momentarily. Have the deck bench tested, and repaired or replaced. Then before installing the repaired/replaced deck into the car again, test all speaker wires for shorts to each other or ground. Any loose speakers can cause this as well, because the terminals can short to ground.
