Audio Systems: 2002 Mazda Protege, amplifier section, voice coils

Question
I have a 2002 Mazda Protege.  The speakers on the passenger side of the car went out.  There's no sound coming from them at all.  What could have caused this problem?  Is it something I could fix myself or am I better off taking the car in?

Answer
ONE: Could be broken wires or shorted out wires going to the speakers.

TWO: Could be a defective amplifier section.

THREE: It could be the speakers on that side have been overpowered and the voice coils are blown.

So, first thing is to determine where the problem is. It will require some troubleshooting to do so.

If this is the original equipment from when the car was new you may be better off just replacing the system.  Repairs at and install/repair shop may be nearly as much as having a new system and speakers put in.

As to fixing it yourself, there is nothing wrong with that but you must know how to troubleshoot the system and determine where the problem is according to the three areas suggested.  It will require a VOM and some testing to do so - as well as skill and knowledge of car audio systems.

Why don't you go to www.crutchfield.com and determine what aftermarket system will fit your car and what the cost is of various alternatives.  You don't have to purchase the new system from them, but if you do they will send a wiring harness conversion and installation instructions with the new unit.

Best wishes,
