Audio Systems: 1984 Supra Celica tuner, supra celica, wiring harnesses

Question
The 1984 sound system has an equalizer (1701) and a tuner (1672). I think the tuner has a short in it (if you tap the on/off toggle button it makes a horrible static sound). Where can I find a replacement? Or is there an after market tuner w/a CD player that will fit?

Answer
This is pretty old stuff.  Don't you want to upgrade it?  Repairs may be more than the system is worth; and you don't know when the next big failure is going to strike!

ONE: Yes, the best place to source products for your car is at www.crutchfield.com who are the masters of what fits in what car and how.  (you don't have to purchase through them, but if you do they will supply the wiring harnesses and instructions for installation).

TWO:  You may try some contact cleaner on the button to see if it will help.  YOu can purchase this stuff at Radio Shack and other electronic stores.  It comes in a spray can and you can spray it down into the button; sometimes it will help.  The static sound is likely due to worn or corroded contacts on that button - or a surrounding circuit.

Hope this helps.
