Audio Systems: trying to hook up new surround sound system, onkyo receiver, rca jacks

Question
Good morning,
We have purchased a new Onkyo receiver & Sony 400 CD/DVD player.  We have had stereo speakers wired into the ceiling (6 in the ceiling + 1 center + 1 subwoofer).  I am trying to hook up all of this mess (including my cable/tivo) to my tv.  I have just realized that my 4 year old tv has limited inputs in the back.  I need help figuring out what to do.

In the back of the tv, in video 1 there are RCA jacks + a SVideo jack.  Those seem to work properly.  In video 2 there are RCA jacks (that don't seem to be working at all) and component jacks (blue, green red) which I don't know if they work at all or not.

I want to run three items into my TV via my receiver.  I want to run the DVD player, my TIVO/Cable system and my PS2 system.  I can use the front set of RCA jacks for the PS2 if I absolutely have to.  What should I do with the TIVO and the DVD player?

Will I get true surround sound if I use RCA jacks?  Do I have to get a new TV?  Is there some other way to connect the DVD & the TIVO through the one set of available/working rear jacks?

Please advise!
Thanks
Cayti

Answer
Without knowing the model number of your receiver and tv I cannot be certain which wiring scheme you should use.

BUT: I have a good idea for you to solve the dilemma by yourself!

There are several system configurations that you may find totally satisfactory for your usage.

If you do not have enough working inputs for what you want to do with the tv you have you can always purchase an A/V switch; a little box with push buttons on it and jacks on the back for additional inputs.  They are not expensive and can be purchased at Walmart, RadioShack, Bestbuy, CircuitCity and such places.

Hope this helps, but if you need more, please come back to me.

Another good place to get help with your hookup questions is the site above. They are nice, color diagrams that give all combinations of hooking up a system.  Go the bottom left hand corner of the page for listings.  When you click on them they will come up as pdf diagrams.
