Audio Systems: subwoofer, woofer speaker, crossover networks

Question
I am want to add a subwoofer to my boat cd player. I have a Kenwood kdc 3025 and would like to add a Jenson MXA6BA6" 200 WATT Amplified sub. Money is a concern and I am trying to do this for as little as possible. The cd player does not have a sub output but does have 2 amp outputs so my question is can I make this system work well together. Also was wondering how quickly this new amp will drain my boat battery. I have only one battery but it is a heavyduty deep cell marine battery and don't want to add another.I would welcome any advise you have for me.

Answer
Go ahead.  You will do just fine.

Actually, a sub amp, when there is no signal, like any other amp draws very little power.

But, when it is pumping out big bass sounds it gobbles up lots of juice from the battery.  You can always add another battery and put it in parallel with the one you have OR replace the one you have with another of higher output ratings.

For crossover to the subamp:  You can take the output directly and feed it with the full range signal with no harm to the system.  It may sound too much upper mid-bass, but in many cases the woofer speaker has such little output at those frequencies that the crossover is not necessary anyway.  So, unless you are a real audiophile with a golden ear you will find it to sound just fine.

IF: you do want to add a crossover there are many passive crossover networks you can purchase and simply add in line with the output of the Kenwood.

ARE YOU SURE: There is not a crossover switch on the Jensen unit?  Usually, there is a switch for 60, 100 or 150 Hz cutoff that is built right into the amplifier circuit.  I can't find the manual on your model, so just check the input panel and you can see it.

Best to you;  subwoofers are wonderful. They do more to add enhancement to a sound system than any one item that you can add to the system.  Best wishes,
