Audio Systems: Chrysler 300M 2001, infinity system, dsp processor

Question
This system has started to act rather strange. 1) Using the balance button will temporarily shut the system down. Most of the time it will restart but occ. it dies completely. It will restart after turning off the ignition or after disconnecting the battery.2) After the system had been playing for some time it will crash with almost unbearable static noise from all the speakers when an attempt is being made to change the mode i.e. from CD to AM or FM.
Function will return to normal after the car had been turned off for some time and the system was cool. This does not happen with a cold system. 3) Adjusting the treble button will shut the system down and be totally unresponsive. This condition requires the disconnection of the battery terminal on the car to get the sound system back.
The local dealer does not seem to have any answer and wants to replace the system totally. $$$$$ ouch.
I would appreciate you comments. This is the top of the line Infinity system that came as a factory install.
Thank you.

Answer
It looks like a major failure of the main dsp processor in the unit.  These units made by Infinity are rather expensive to repair.

The car dealer does not usually have the technical skills to do repairs; you should go to a quality install/repair shop.

It may be less expensive to just replace the system with an aftermarket unit.  But, donot attempt to install the new system yourself as it requires an experienced tech who knows the removal drill for the Infinity system and how to rewire it with an aftermarket set.

The page above will give you some of the possible units that will fit your vehicle.  There are many choices from under $100 to much, much more. If you do buy from Crutchfield (and you don't have to; you can go to any supplier) they will furnish installation instructions and wiring diagrams and harnasses that your installer can use.

Unless you are really desirous of curing the INfinity system, I suggest you replace it with a good brand name unit.

Be sure and watch the videos on the crutchfield page which will give you abetter idea of what must be done - whether you decide to do it yourself or have another person do it (such as a friend or member of the family).

Hope this helps.

PS:  This could also, I go to thinking, be from a loose connector running between the units or inside one of the units.  If so, it might be a simple cure to just have a tech pull the unit and check all connections and anything that appears to be a poor connection and reassemble it. If you can get behind the dash and wiggle some of the cables it might lead you to the solution, too.  Worth trying.
