Audio Systems: Head Unit Flickering, cdx l350, sony xplod

Question
I got the 12v+ cable from the battery straight to the amp, then I got the ground cable directly from the amp to a metal screw attached to my chassis of my truck. Then I have the REM attached to the back of the head unit directly from the amp. Then the got the subs wired to the amp via wire terminals(12 Gauge Wire). Then the Power On is hooked up to the cab speakers which is connected to the head unit.

Thanks much.

-----Question-----
Hello,

I just recently built a whole new audio system for my truck. I currently have a Sony CDX L350 head unit, Sony Xplod X 2 Channel Amp (1200 Total Watts), and (2) 12" Visionk Subs. Well I installed them and everything and it works semi fine, but whenever I turn the volume up, the head unit shuts off then comes on and repeats until I turn the volume back down again, then it goes back to normal. Do you think the Head unit cant keep up? Granted the Sony CDX L350 unit is fairly old.

Thanks Much

I think you have an installation problem.  When it the head shuts down it is because of excessive currents or overload of somekind.  Are you running the power wires through this unit to the amps?  That could be your problem.  Or there may be a grounding or power feedback somewhere along the way.  It is not proper for the head to shut down; it would be for the amps when turned up to high levels, but the head unit does not draw big current chunks and should be safe at any level - on its own power.

I would suggest you take a look at your wiring scheme and separate the power lines from the head unit and the power amps.

Answer
Try grounding the amps in the same physical spot the head unit is grounded; when they are separated by long distances the metal between the grounds has currents and voltages that can cause the very thing you are experiencing.

Hope this helps.
