Audio Systems: 97 Honda Passport stereo wiring dash lights and running lights trouble, honda passport, dash lights

Question
I'm sorry, I may not have explained myself enough... after disconnecting the old stereo (and without reconnecting the two "extra" wires) the result has been that I have lost my dash/dimmer lights and my running lights...  In other words, those two extra wires have somehow broken the circut for my dash/dimmer lights and my running lights and, obviously I need to get (at least my running lights - in case I am not calling them the right thing, I am refering to the orange lights on the outside of my headlights, the ones that light up when you turn the headlights on halfway and/or the lights that blink when you flip the turn signal)

So you see the problem.. I need to figure out "where" and/or "how" to reconnect those wires in order to get my outside running lights and my inside dash lights back.  Once again, the freaky thing is that if I hardwire them to either the switch or constant power wires the result is that my dash lights will go on as soon as I turn the key, and will stay on until I turn on the headlights (the opposite desired effect... in fact I am hoping the fact that connecting the two wires to the switched/constant power wires actually corrects the problem with the new problem that the correction is the "opposite" of how they are supposed to work.  If I could figure out how to get them to turn on "only" when I turn on my headlights and stay off the rest of the time (like they are supposed to) instead of the opposite... well... viola!!! that would solve the problem!!!  My real frustration is wondering why the heck the dash/dimmer and outside running lights are running through the damn stereo in the first place?  One more piece of info...  The car does have a keyless entry and alarm installed (factory I believe) although I have long since used either one of them... Maybe that makes a difference?  At this point I am at a total loss...

Please help... like I said... I "could" do without my dash/dimmer lilghts (although I would prefer not to) but I must get my running lights back else I risk getting a ticket... (did I mention that when I wire the dash/dimmer lights so they go on all the time "except when I turn the headlights on" that the dimmer know is somehow bypassed.. ie. the dash lights are on full and turning the dimmer knob has no effect...  I thought that info may also be of interest/help in figuring out what is/has happened?)

Ok... sorry for the long ramble, I just wanted to make sure you understood exactly what has/is happening...

I appreciate the time and help... If this is something that I should just take in to a honda dealer or a stereo place, by all means, please let me know... and if that is the case, could you suggest the most appropriate? (ie. a honda dealer v. a stereo install shop v. a mechanic... etc.)... or if there is someone or somewhere I could search that may have more info on Passport/Rodeo stereo wiring troubleshooting... I have done a bunch of google searches and haven't been able to find much...

Thanx again and good luck with this one... It makes no sense to me...

Jason

RE: 1997 Honda Passport - aftermarket stereo install

I have been trying to install a new CD/Radio and have run into a frustrating problem...

There are two extra wires - Orange and Orange/White (Dimmer and Illumination) there are no places for these wires in the new CD/radio wire harness...

If I try to hardwire them into either the ACC (switched) or Batt (constant) wires I get either or a combination of the following...

My running lights (which are now not working) will turn on regardless of whether I turn the headlights on or not...

My dash/dimmer will light up (but will not dim) only when the headlights are off... if I turn the headlights on the dash/dimmer lights go off.

Connecting the Orange and or Orange/White wires to either or the Switched or Constant power wires just seems to either turn the dash and or running lights on permenantly (until I turn the headlights on that is) and disconnecting the wires leaves me with no running lights or dash/dimmer lights...

What the Hugh?  Please help...!?!  I saw a very similar question to this posted by someone with a 98 Rodeo (pretty much the same car with the same problem) however the suggested solution did not do the trick... I have checked all of the fuses and the dimmer knob (ad nausium...)

If you can bust this mystery I will be both impressed and very, very, grateful...

Thanx,
Jason

try just leaving them not connected at all.  this will just make the cd player realize you dont have a hookup for this and it will stay at full brightness regardless of the brightness of the dash lights.
Just cap them off with wirenuts or electrical tape or something and that's that.
If that's unacceptable or doesnt work, let me know.
Good luck!

Answer
what probably happened is that you ran the lights backwards through the system (instead of the regular switches and stuff runing the lights you "back fead" the power over that orange wire etc to them).  this easily can blow fuses,  just double check all the fuses, take them out 1 by 1 and inspect them very closely, make sure they all get back in the same spot.
